If you are a co-owner of the credit debt, then you are obliged to pay the debt by yourself if the other co-owner dies. This type of credit card ownership often comes back to haunt younger family members who decided to help their loved one in the first place. What they didn’t know is that they become eligible for inheriting the debt by putting their name beside the name of their family member. The harsh reality comes their way only after their loved one has passed away.

Unfortunately, there are hundreds of gene mutations like Huntington’s and all of them pose a danger for our well-being. Because they are caused by a single gene, they are easy to be found through testing. But not all diseases are like that. In some rare cases, dementia is highly inheritable. Also, if you have a combination of some common genes, the chance of developing dementia is high for you. Luckily, in most cases, dementia is not hereditary.

Despite not being entirely hereditary, people still want to undergo testing. The availability of tests again depends on the type of dementia you have. The available test can only show you the presence or absence of the genes that cause dementia. A single-gene disease like Huntington’s can be easily tracked. With dementia, you can never be sure.

Types of Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are the most common types of dementia. Ten percent of cases of Lewy body dementia are hereditary. Having a hereditary case of vascular dementia is even rarer, but cases of having this dementia because of a mutation of the NOTCH3 gene were recorded.

The type of dementia that you have the most significant chances of inheriting is frontotemporal dementia. Almost 50% of recorded cases of this type of dementia can be traced to the genes called MAPT, GRN, and C9orf72. If you have these genes and live to a golden age, you will develop dementia without a doubt. Ten percent of people who have FTD also have it in their family.

Getting Tested

If you have a loved one that has dementia, it means that you also are at risk of developing this condition later in life. But despite having a chance, it is not definite that you will develop it. Even if you undergo genetic tests for rare types of dementia, you won’t have a definitive answer. In most cases, testing is not able to give a precise answer and is almost unnecessary.

In the majority of dementia cases, genetics are not the main factor of risk. The primary risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease is no other than age. Age, of course, can’t be controlled, but other things that lower the risk of dementia can. If you want to lower your chance of developing this condition, try a healthier diet, quit smoking, and take good care of your overall health.

Quick question: Which state doesn’t celebrate Veterans Day?

Although we don’t know the reasons behind this, we can say Veterans Day is a state holiday in the other 49 states.

The holiday honors military veterans of the United States, and it coincides with Armistice Day. Armistice Day is celebrated worldwide as a mark of the armistice signed between Allies and Germany which ended World War I.

Since it is a federal holiday, some schools and companies are not open on Veterans Day.

The History Behind Veterans Day

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson issued a message to all Americans who fought in the Great War. He appreciated their sacrifice and all the possibilities they gave to the American people by fighting for the country. The message was issued on November 11.

However, not until 1938 was the eleventh day of the eleventh month declared a holiday. At the time, it was known as Armistice Day, the name some countries across the globe still use.

Fifteen years later, a campaign was started to change the name to All Veterans Day. This way, the day would be dedicated to all military veterans, not just to those who fought in World War I.

The idea was finally accepted, and the word Armistice was replaced with the word Veterans. Traditionally, a moment of silence is held at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Parades are organized throughout the country every year, with the Veterans Day Parade in New York City being the most famous. It is estimated that more than half a million people gather on 5th Avenue every year.

How to Celebrate Veterans Day with an Older Adult

Is there a military veteran living in your neighborhood? Go and meet them. Ask them about their experience in the war and how they feel about it.

You can even make a greeting card and buy flowers. Write how much you appreciate everything they’ve done for the country and their contribution to peace around the world.

An even better idea is to make a meal at your home. Call them to come over for dinner and a drink.

How to Cope with Social Isolation

Social isolation is a common problem in the elderly.  There are many older adults who live alone because their children moved away and their spouse died. They don’t go out much or mingle with others.

Being socially active is essential for numerous reasons.

Some people like to be alone, but the majority can’t be entirely happy without a healthy social life. And it doesn’t affect only our happiness.

A study conducted by Susan Pinker proved that the biggest impact on longevity is close relationships and social integration. Not diet, not clean air or exercising, but our social life.

Thus social isolation negatively affects people’s lives on many levels. There is even a TEDx talk on the isolation of older adults.

As a caregiver, it is important to address social isolation and react properly.

How to Recognize Social Isolation

All people are more-or-less at risk of being socially isolated. However, there are groups that are at a higher risk than others.

The risk of being alone depends on factors, such as:

  • age
  • gender
  • health condition
  • living location
  • nationality

The older people are, the more likely they feel alone. We don’t contact our friends as frequently as we used to. Our children probably have their own families to take care of. As we get older, our mobility declines, so we spend more time indoors than before.

Women also tend to be more isolated than men. One of the reasons is they have a higher life expectancy. They usually outlive their spouse and stay alone. The loss of a loved one also increases the risk of loneliness.

Living far away from your family means rare gatherings. Seniors who live in remote rural areas meet their family members only a few times a year or even less.

Some nations are simply more social than others. Latin Americans are more likely to start a conversation with a stranger than Japanese people are. Also, when you are a foreigner in the country you live in, you are likely to feel lonelier than nationals.

Coping with Social Isolation

Fighting against loneliness is not as difficult as it appears to be.

The key thing is to stay mentally active and exercise regularly.

Join a yoga or fitness class. Walk around the neighborhood every day. Keep your body young and meet others who take care of their health, too. People who exercise are usually more positive.

We’ve mentioned several times on our blog, but here we go once again – volunteer. Ask about NGOs or the Red Cross office in your area. Such organizations always need volunteers, and they will have special respect for an elder contributing to society. Not only you will meet new people, but there is a sense of accomplishment when helping others.

A new hobby is always fun. Find a few people who enjoy the same and make a group activity out of it. Is it reading books, playing table games, or fishing? Doesn’t matter, as long as you enjoy it and can invite others to join.

If your family has moved far away because of work, consider moving closer to them. You are more flexible since you are retired.

Last but not least, adopt a pet. Older adults who have adopted an animal feel less lonely and go out of the house more often.

Loneliness and social isolation are not healthy. If you feel you need more people in your life, reach out to them.
